INFORMATION ABOUT SIMON FRASER EXTRACURRICULAR SPORTS 

Cross country running

This program is for Grades 2 to 7 and runs from mid- September to late October. Each week, for four weeks, there is one practice (usually before school), and a meet (i.e. a race). The meets are after school at Douglas Park. Students walk there from the School and can be picked up at end of the meets or will be walked back to the School. There is also a Zone Finals meet at Trout Lake Park during the fifth week. Thursday, October 19th from 1:00-3:00 pm was the Zone Finals

 Volleyball

This program is for Grades 6 and 7, although occasionally exceptions are made for Grade 5s if there is room on a team. The season is from the last week of October to early December. If there are enough interested students and coaches/sponsors, there can be up to four teams: junior (Grade 6) and senior (Grade 7) girls and junior (Grade 6) and senior (Grade 7) boys. 

This year, Simon Fraser has three teams:

  • Junior girls (Grade 6):

    • Practices are Tuesdays at 8:15-8:55 am;

    • Games are Tuesdays at 3:30-4:45 pm. Game locations vary and will be at Simon Fraser, as well as at other elementary schools. 

    • Alison McTaggart is the coach (agmctaggart@vsb.bc.ca).

  • Senior girls (Grade 7): 

    • Practices are Mondays at 8:00-8:55 am and Tuesdays at 3:05-4:00 pm

    • Games are Thursdays at 3:30-4:45 pm. Game locations vary and will be at Simon Fraser, as well as at other elementary schools.

    • Ms. Liz, the Grade 6/7 student teacher, is coaching and Ms. Turkington is the team sponsor (hturkington@vsb.bc.ca).

  • Senior boys (Grades 6/7):

    • Practices are Wednesday at 8:00-8:55 am and Thursdays at 3:05-4:00 pm.

    • Games are Wednesdays at 3:30-4:45 pm. Game locations vary and will be at Simon Fraser, as well as at other elementary schools.

    • Jon Hooten is coaching. Ms. Rocke (lrocke@vsb.bc.ca) and Ms. Szampias (jszampias@vsb.bc.ca) are the team sponsors.

Basketball

This program is for Grades 6 and 7, although occasionally exceptions are made for Grade 5s if there is room on a team. The season is from mid-January to early March. During the season, there are 1-2 practices and one game. If there are enough interested students and coaches/sponsors, there can be up to four teams: junior (Grade 6) and senior (Grade 7) girls and junior (Grade 6) and senior (Grade 7) boys.

  • Junior boys league games are on Mondays after school.

  • Junior girls league games are on Tuesdays after school.

  • Senior boys league games are on Wednesdays after school.

  • Senior girls league games are on Thursdays after school.

More information will be provided as available.

Track and field

This program is for Grades 4 to 7. The season is from May to June. Mini-meets are after school and there is a Zone Finals at the end of the season.

Ultimate frisbee

This program is coed and is for Grade 7, although exceptions are made for Grade 6s if there is room on a team. The season starts in May and ends with a tournament in June.

This year, we have two parent volunteers as coaches. More information will be provided as available.
